Wall Art Paper ‘Hortensia Calamine’ by Amanda Deadman Art
‘Hortensia Calamine’ is the second of Amanda Deadman’s circular series named ‘Hortensia’ which is the Latin name for the Hydrangea plant. Each flower in this wallpaper art has a graduated colour wash of Farrow & Ball colour ‘Calamine’ fading into white. Amanda then paints squiggly lines all over in gold ink and cuts hydrangea-shaped petals in various sizes. Black and dark grey edges add contrast to each flower.
Each flower is shaped so that the edges curl upwards enhancing the 3D effect of the whole piece. The flowers are arranged in a circle on heavy watercolour paper with the larger, darker ones raised up on varying heights on tiny foam board plinths. The height of the flowers descends out from the centre getting lower at the edges.
A stunning and highly textured modern relief design reveals individual flowers on closer inspection. The piece casts different shadows and light reflections from the metallic paint depending on the direction of the light.
Materials used: Farrow & Ball emulsion, gold ink and watercolour paper on foam board in a white glazed (Perspex) deep box frame.
