Artistic Vessels Artist
Nancy Sutcliffe is an award-winning contemporary glass engraver and gilder. At art school, she specialised in Medical and Scientific Illustration and graduated with a BA. Hons in Design. The discipline and attention to detail required in that subject have informed much of her subsequent work. Drawing is key to her artistic practice. Her engravings are essentially carved drawings on glass.
For several years Nancy shared her time between her studio in rural Herefordshire and city living in the Middle East. During her time in the UAE, Nancy developed a fascination for gold leaf. This is now a key feature of her figurative engravings. Her extensive experimentation has resulted in a richly detailed style of inscribed applied gold leaf. This style has become characteristic of her work.
Nancy has developed a unique and contemporary approach to the traditional craft of glass engraving. She uses various combinations of engraving, gilding and painting in her artistic practice. The results are truly magnificent.
Nancy’s original glass art is made for exhibitions, galleries and collections. She exhibits internationally and has taught in Germany, Sweden and in 2019, will teach in the USA. She has been a finalist in International glass prize exhibitions in Japan 2018 and Germany 2014 and participated in the British Glass Biennale several times, and in the Lithuanian Glass Biennale.
Nancy’s solo exhibitions have been in the UK and Germany, and she has work in private and public collections. Nancy was selected, alongside Katie Huskie, as the Wimbledon AELTC Artist of the year 2018.
