Glassware: Choosing the right wine glass
80% of wine tasting is an olfactory experience. The width and depth of the wine glass bowl, and the width of the rim, all have an effect on the aroma of the wine.
A large bowl allows the aromas of the wine to be released, while a narrower wine glass channels the scents towards the nose.
Narrower white wine glasses are great for preserving floral notes as the bowl is shorter, bringing the nose in closer to the aromas. The reduced height helps concentrate fruit and spice flavours and expresses more acidity in the wine. The shape also maintains a cooler temperature and is perfect for light, fresh, crisp wines.
Larger bowl white wine glasses for enjoying nuttier mature wins and maintaining temperature. Perfect for full-bodied white wines such as oak-aged Chardonnay and Viognier.
A wide bowl with a narrow rim helps balance the wine and directs the wine to the centre of the tongue to moderate acidity. For red wines with floral notes such as Pinot Noir.
Taller red wine glasses with a slightly narrower bowl and wider rim for full-bodied red wine to concentrate the aromatic compounds in the bouquet. Perfect for wines with more spicy aromas like Syrah and Malbec. The wider rim helps diffuse the bitterness of the tannins.
A hock glass is perfect for showcasing dry, sharp rosé wines as it directs the wine to the tip of the tongue.
Thin glass flutes for champagne to concentrate the aromas and the rising bubbles. Or champagne coupes to help dissipate the CO2 more quickly – and look très chic!
If you are looking for hipster cups you have definitely come to the wrong place! Our glassware is designed to look amazing and to leave room for the wines’ aromas (bouquet) to collect above the wine itself.
Please! Never overfill any glass except your champagne glass.
