Jiayun Ding glass artist is a fast-rising star in the glass art world. Her style is eclectic and exciting and each work she turns her hand to is a tour de force of glass-making par excellence.
For Jiayun, glass blowing is like therapy, enabling her to get away from herself and be at one, in the moment, just her and her glass creation. The material world slips away into the ether, leaving just Jiayun and her glasswork.
This freedom from the mentalism of every day enables her to express the concept within the piece and combine it with unique features that make it her own.
Jiayun’s translations in glass begin with the initial mental concept and, once the patience of the glassblowing has begun it is uninterrupted until the exact colour is revealed at the annealing. From conceptualisation to a flawless finish without pause. A realised phoenix forms, rising from the ashes of those initial imaginings.
Jiayun hopes her audience appreciates both the consummate beauty of her glasswork, as well as the concepts and ideas that they convey.
She has studied, interned and worked at many famous glass places including the Corning Museum of Glass, Blowfish Gallery and the National Glass Centre.
In October 2024 Jiayun was Finalist Artist for Sculpture at Visual Art Open 2024.
Her work has been exhibited throughout the UK, as well as the Czech Republic and China.
Artist’s Statement
Glass is my favourite material in the world. Sometimes it’s easy to control, sometimes it’s stubborn. It can be tough but also fragile. Glass has its own personality like a human being, [sometimes a] moody person. Working with glass is kind of like running a relationship.
I channel ideas into tangible expressions, pushing the boundaries of traditional glassblowing. Through my creations, I strive to evoke thought, emotion, and a deep appreciation for the fusion of artistic vision and the delicate beauty of glass.
