Dreya Bennet glass is inspired by the sea and its different moods. Dreya’s fascination for the sea and water, in general, began with the swimming pools and the sea in Africa. Her love of water intensified on return to Cornwall; seeing its beautiful beaches and the crashing Atlantic surf of the Cornish Coastline.
Dreya was a keen surfer in her teens, which developed further when she discovered the thrill of kitesurfing. Her incredible enthusiasm and ability led Dreya to compete on the world circuit achieving a ranking of World no. 3! She also set a world record by kitesurfing from Cornwall to Ireland (under maiden name Wharry) – an accomplished lady indeed!
Glasswork came into Dreya’s life by accident while studying at Falmouth art college. She instantly fell in love with the look and the process of working with glass. This led to a specialism in Architectural Stained Glass at Swansea. Since retiring from competitive sport, Dreya Bennet glass art has taken off.
Artist Statement
“The colour of glass, its reflections and translucent quality instantly captured my heart. Glass has a similar quality to water. It is enigmatic, you can look at it or through it. It is there and not there and can create a potent visual effect, either opulent or subtle. I love the challenge of designing for different buildings, interiors and people, whether a large architectural piece or an intensely personal small piece”.
